For many years Southbroom had a municipal library, next to the current Police station in the village, which was well run and well supported. Unfortunately just over ten years ago the Municipality decided to close our beloved Library. Many Southbroom residents are retired or semi-retired and reading is an important part of their life, but the library is also well utilised by the whole community including children. Losing the library was not an option so the community needed to find a way to save it.

A group of volunteers got together and persuaded the municipality to allow them to continue to use the building and facilities. The present library is funded by Southbroom Ratepayers Association, donations and fundraising. This enables the volunteer “librarians” to keep up to date with demand and regularly purchase new books. The majority of maintenance and upgrades to the building have been carried out using library funds and donations and the gardens are maintained by local resident, avid gardener and historian Libby Cochrane.
