SOUTHBROOM CONSERVATION
International Beach Clean Up
The International Beach Cleanup 2009 was held on Saturday,
19 September, and the Southbroom Conservancy was involved in
this initiative. Thank you to David and Sally Wigley, Peddy
and Helen Bam and Doug and Heather Campbell for cleaning our
beaches from Granny’s Pool to Nkobi. They were pleased to
find that our beaches are relatively free of litter but did
nevertheless fill a number of refuse bags.
Hibiscus Shoreline Challenge
David Halle’s very successful beach walk from Hibberdene to
Port Edward has now reached our part of the coast. On
Sunday, 1 November, the walk departed from Lucien Beach in
Manaba and ended at Southbroom main beach. On Sunday, 15
November, the walk will go from Southbroom main beach to
Impenjati and the final walk will take place on Sunday, 29
November, from Impenjati to Port Edward. All the walks start
at 7.30am and transport is arranged from the finish back to
where the walk started. These walks have been very well
attended with walkers remarking on the beauty of our
coastline and the excellent organization and friendliness of
everyone. Look out for information on these walks in the
Herald.
Christmas Beach Walk
David Halle will be organizing a walk in December. Watch out
for details in the Herald.
Open Gardens
Nature’s Cottage in Southbroom Avenue will be having an open
garden on 28 and 29 November from 0900 to 1700. Proceeds
from this will be donated to Crags View Wild Care Centre. On
each day between 1400 and 1500 Crags View will be giving a
presentation/demonstration on the role they play in our
area.
Three gardens in Umtentweni will be open to the public on 14
November and proceeds will go to conservation. Watch out for
details of these open gardens in the Herald.
Let's Protect Our Natural Vegetation
The Southbroom Conservancy would like to draw your attention
to a path which has been hacked through the dune bush to the
beach, south of Granny’s Pool near the entrance opposite
“The Roost”. This is unacceptable and if we do not respect
the importance of our indigenous vegetation, we will have
degradation of our dunes and an infestation of alien plants.
Please be conscious of preserving our natural heritage and
report any such activity in the future.

LIBRARY NEWS
One Year Old
The library,
as we know it now, is one year old! It went
uncelebrated, but we are planning great things for the
December holiday period. There is going to be a cake table
with delicious homemade cakes, savoury tarts, and all sorts
of fancy stuff to tempt you. We will have an Art Exhibition
of our local artists on the same day. It will be a fun day
for everybody. Please bring your friends and family and come
to join in the celebrations with us. The final date has not
been finalised, but watch the Press for details!!.
New and Old Books
The new books bought recently have proved most popular and
we are planning to purchase more new ones in December.
We have a number of duplicate books on the shelves and have
decided to sell these at R10.00 each to the public. Anybody
interested is most welcome to purchase these books at the
bargain prices mentioned.
Donations
We are truly grateful to all of you who have donated books
or made financial contributions. Your generosity ensures the
success of our very special Library.
